EXPLORING THE MAGICAL AND THE MUNDANE

Hello from Park City

Been a couple of days and I thought I’d catch you up. The drive from Moab to Grand Junction is short, even with us taking Route 128 which winds along the Colorado river. Highly recommended. It is beautiful driving through towering red cliffs.

Here’s a movie…

Route 128

Grand Junction is an interesting city. It has a small population for a city, but caters to all the small towns and large ranches in the outlying area, according to our waitress that night at dinner. It also had a great little museum with not just white people’s artifacts, but native cultures.

Loved all the fascinating and differing patterns

Yesterday, we left Grand Junction and headed up to the wonderful Rock Art of McConkie Ranch near Vernal. We had been in the area a few years back, but missed the Ranch’s rock art. This time, we planned on seeing it.

We took hwy 139 through Douglas Pass and came across some roadside Rock Art brought to our attention by placards, courtesy of the BLM. Just short hikes and great information.

And then we arrived at McConkie Ranch.

The thing about rock art is it on rocks and sometimes you need to walk and climb to see it. Those rocks are like brick ovens, even on cool days, so make sure you bring water with you, have proper footwear, and a hiking stick can come in handy. Lots of cute lizards and be aware you are in snake country.

When we parked, there were a couple of other parties at the parking space who began hiking toward the Upper Main Panel. We decided to take the 3 Kings Trail first. Turned out it was the furthest away and we were glad we did do it first. The three kings panel was at the end of the trail and was up high. I would have needed climbing gear and be 20 years younger to visit up close. How in the world did the Ancients create them way up there? Obviously they were a lot more spry than I!

Following the trail to the three kings…there’s rock art in those rocks!

On the hike to the kings, there were plenty of pictographs and petroglyphs not so high up, where you could really study the art. We explored them on our return hike. Mr.Al and I took dozens of pictures…here are a couple of fun ones…

This one is so old it is already getting the plack patina again.
Ancient stories

We got back to our car, rehydrated, ate some jerky and m&m’s, and then headed to the upper main panel. Again…amazing, fascinating, and wonderful . Here are just a few pictures of the dozens we took.

Vision Quests? Important People? Who were they?
This one was amazing! You had to look up to see it, but wow!
There were several numbered images. We are trying to find out who numbered them, why, and what they said about them.
Here’s a view of the lovely valley. Our car is parked in the dirt area to the right of the tallest pine.

We got onto Park City at dusk. Today is a chill day…most likely mosey around in town. Tomorrow we mosey home…taking it in short driving blocks and using back roads if we can.
