EXPLORING THE MAGICAL AND THE MUNDANE

Island in the Sky

Don’t you love that evocative name for a National Park? That is the name of the portion of Canyonlands we visited…Island in the Sky. And it was. You cross a short bridge over a 6000 foot deep chasm and there you are.

The annoying news first…not convinced this part of the park accommodates the volumes of visitors as easily as neighboring Arches does. Lots of peeps. Lots of parking, walking to the view, taking a picture, and rushing on before the tour bus arrives.

The only way to really immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the park would be to hike. However, all the places to park were full, reminding me of Mt.Rainier during the wild flower blooming season.

The not annoying news….it was worth it. And, Mr. Al and I managed to find roadside pullouts where we could be with the stillness, with the ravens, and the wind. Such a beautiful experience.

Picture time!

The blond grasses.
These people…living their best life as others waited their turn for their photo opp. Heeheehee.

Can you see Raven enjoying the thermals?

We also stopped at Dead Horse Point State Park. Glorious…just as grand as the Grand Canyon, in my humble opinion

Mr. Al taking it all in.
I am hearing the Grand Canyon Suite in my head right about now.
Another raven in thermal flight

Today we are sneaking over to Colorado to see Mesa Verde. It is only a four-hour round-trip visit, with lots of exploring time in between. Best get going.
