Remember when I spoke about the exploding star…super nova sounds cooler…that created the Crab Nebula and could be seen in our sky as a second sun? It was documented on Newspaper Rock back in 1054.

The Twin Suns behind the weeds

Newspaper Rock is an amalgamation of pictographs carved by the Native Americans living in the area. Wikipedia states so succinctly…

“The first carvings at the Newspaper Rock site were made around 2,000 years ago, left by people from the Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, Anglo, and Pueblo cultures. In Navajo, the rock is called “Tse’ Hone’” which translates to a rock that tells a story.

Thank you, Wikipedia. I am not feeling very clever this morning. There are over 650 images and thought to be a place The People left information…sort of like the community bulletin boards outside of the grocery store that announce everything from upcoming local events, to lost cats, to cars for sale, to yard-work.

The area where Newspaper Rock is located is called Bear’s Ears and is considered a sacred area to the Native Americans living in the area. It is beautiful and expansive.

One drives through Bears Ears to reach the Needles Section of Canyonlands.

Canyonlands is a hiker’s paradise. Most of the park is seen from the trails. Mr. Al and I took a couple of hikes while we were there. They weren’t too long because…well…me and heat and those red clay walls that love to retain heat…but we got out there with plenty of water and saw some wonders which I will now share in pictures…

So beautiful. Could not stop taking pictures. Clear and still.

Stopped for lunch after our hike
We were joined by this raven who flew across the expanse directly towards us. He had a lot to say and then flew off again towards the Island In The Sky part of Canyonlands. We decided we will follow his advice and visit there today.
